Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur | Château Lafon-Rochet

The only 1855 Classified Growth with a new Chateau constructed in the 20th Century, Lafon-Rochet boost three centuries of history yet it is still a well-kept secret for lovers of classically built Clarets. The property was left in disarray after the French revolution, and only until the Tessesor Family took over in the late 50s, this property was given the love it deserved.

Ideally placed between Cos D'Estournel, Cos Labory and Lafite, Lafon-Rochet lies on a complex terroir where gravel, sand, limestone intermingle with a very special blue clay, also found at Chateau Petrus.

One of the biggest improvement in the cellar was the adoption of concrete vats, created by same architect who designed the new cellars at Cheval Blanc. This allows the team at Lafon-Rochet to micro-vinify each of the 40 parcels, in a myriad of different shapes and size concrete containers. This painstaking work brings out the typicity of each plot, and allows for a precise, masterful blending prior to “assemblage” in barrel.

Vintage 2020 launches at a very competitive price of € 189 per 6, few % down on last year release. In our humble opinion, this screams value all over and we strongly advise to add few cases of this excellent Saint-Estèphe to your drinking collection of Bordeaux 2020. Jane Anson finds it "attractive, (with) plenty of clarity together with a feeling of linearity. A measured, successful wine that will age well". Here at Wine Source, we couldn't agree more.

93 Points, Jane Anson, Decanter
"Attractive, well-paced fruits, plenty of clarity to the flavours, together with a feeling of linearity to the tannins. Austerity through the mid-palate constrains the brambled cassis fruit, but things build back up again and this is a measured, successful wine that will age well. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. First year with Eric Boissenot accompanying Jean-Claude Berrouet as consultants."

93-94 Points, James Suckling
“Blackberry and spice with firm, chewy tannins that show polish and focus. It’s medium-to full-bodied with excellent energy. Blackberry and blackcurrant character on the finish with a touch of cedar and spice.”
