Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur | Château Cheval Blanc
As a direct allocator of this iconic Saint Emilion, our team had the pleasure to visit the Chateau last week and tasted the precious juice directly from barrel. Vintage 2020 at Cheval has clearly delivered impressive wines of status and gravitas - The dark and brooding fruit profile has all the hallmarks of a stunning vintage, promising long drinking window thanks to an energetic tannic structure we only encounter in the very best vintages.
The Chateau was full of surprises, releasing the 2020 range with pricing in line with the previous 2019 vintage. The latter was around 30% down on 2018, placing the new 2020 release in a very sweet spot for collectors and wine lovers who seek value. Alas, production was affected by heatwave at harvest, hence quantities released are incredibly small, and will be offered on balanced order with the superb young sibling, Petit Cheval.
Only critic who tasted the wine so far is Jean-Marc Quarin, Bordeaux specialist, who awarded 99 Points to this latest creation. We are expecting other critics to follow suit in the coming days. Early commentators are suggesting 2020 is a "Merlot vintage" and both Cheval and the young Petit might well represent some of the must-buy of the 2020 campaign.

From the Estate:
The aromas are typical of a warm vintage. Black fruit mingles with notes of garrigue and pepper. The minty freshness holds the aromatic ensemble well. The attack is opulent. The power and density of the wine are remarkable, and the mouth lingers thanks to a rich and full tannin structure. The wine lengthens as it tightens to an impressive finish.
Wine Source Tasting at the Chateau:
This has the typical voluptuous perfume we would expect of its warm vintage: ripe black fruits with notes of pepper and menthol. On the palate, the attack is full, rich and powerful, finishing incredibly fine and long.

From the Estate: The nose fully expresses flowers and red fruit. The freshness surprises. The attack, frank and chiselled, is immediately followed by a tender, unctuous mid-palate where the enveloping tannins lead the wine to a juicy and crunchy finish. The aromatic persistence of the wine is fruity and complex.

The Petit Cheval gives a fine floral nose with attractive, appetising red fruits, which lead to an open-knit palate with gorgeous, silky tannins and a long, juicy finish.
