Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur | Château Angelus

One of the oldest family-owned estate in St. Emilion, Chateau Angelus always shines in sunny vintages, and in 2020 the result achieved by Hubert de Bouard is nothing short of exceptional.

The Chateau was one of the first to introduce winemaking practices popular in Burgundy back in the 80s. Whole bunch fermentation, longer ageing on fine lees, micro-vinification of single parcels and open vat fermentation.
Hubert de Bouard, owner of Angelus, had a clear vision for refining the family's recipe. Since taking the helm of this stunning property, Angelus has risen within the ranks, delivering compelling wines of beautiful structure and vibrant personality.

In 2020, this expert blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc shines for its freshness. The latter grape is now a pivotal variety in the Right Bank, helping to lift otherwise heavy Merlot based wines. Along with Chateau Lafleur, Angelus was one of the first proponents for higher plantings of Cabernet Franc on the small limestone patches found in the right bank of the Gironde River. The unique clone, Bouchet, is an ancient strain of Cab Franc currently making headlines as one of the best antidote for 'global warming'.
We truly believe this to be a wine which will reward careful cellaring - a text book example of the vintage to add to your collection of 2020 Bordeaux.

97 Points, Jane Anson, Decanter
"Supple damson fruits, I love the aromatics on this and the striking fruits. Silky in texture, balanced and elegant, there are big tannins that slowly but surely creep up on you through the palate. This is a sleek, poised, and confidently-constructed Angélus, with depth to the olive, chocolate, cassis body and a crushed mint leaf kiss on the finish. As often with this vintage it is not an exuberant hug, it is more about discreet power and gorgeous stealing-up of flavours and textures giving depth and subtle power. 3.62pH, aged in large sized oak cass and oak barrels. A yield of 37hl/ha."

98-99 Points, James Suckling
“This is wonderfully refined and balanced with such pretty depth. Full-bodied and so polished and pure. Subtle at first, then it takes off and keeps coming. Sophisticated. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc.”
