This En Primeur week opens with the latest release of Chateau Péby Faugeres, a long awaited appointment for international wine lovers who cherish this hedonistic bottling of imposing structure and stirring flavour complexity.
Owned by Silvio Denz, of Lalique Crystal fame, Peby Faugeres is a micro-production, 100% Merlot coming from the oldest vines of this estate in Saint Emilion. A mere 7.5hectares of vines are planted with various Merlot clones, averaging 50 years of age, yielding a minuscule output of roughly 10,000 bottles per vintage.
Following several perfect vintages, Chateau Peby Faugeres comes to market with an impressive 2020 millesime, which we know by now has favoured the vineyards of Saint Emilion. "Blueberry preserves, plum pudding and Christmas cake" are some of the descriptors used by Lisa Perrotti-Brown to report on this potential 96+ wine via the Wine Advocate's pages. Clearly "one for the hedonists", Peby Faugeres boosts monumental intensity of flavours, tons of freshness and a kick of spices in the very long finish.
For wine lovers partial to a decadent, awe-inspiring style of Bordeaux, Peby Faugeres is the only savvy choice one could make when picking their En Primeurs purchases. The Grand Vin is released along the utterly quaffable La Merle, a second wine which will deliver tons of drinking pleasure upon landing in bottle in 2023.
Thanks to a direct relationship with Silvio Denz, we have direct access to the limited numbers of cases released this year. Each of the beautifully engraved bottles, can also be turned into larger formats of remarkable beauty carrying the "Merle et Raisins" logo from Rene Lalique (1928).

"The 2020 Péby Faugères sports a deep purple-black color and pronounced notes of blueberry preserves, plum pudding and Christmas cake, followed by hints of licorice, Indian spices and sandalwood with a waft of wild mushrooms. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with concentrated black fruit preserves, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and spicy. This wine has all the volume nobs turned to maximum—and it works! Definitely one for the hedonists, though. Drink 2027-2050"
